Meet Marissa Owens. Player of self-described “scruffy folk” and right up your alley if you’re a fan of raw lyrics and acoustic guitars ala Paul Baribeau (although with better recording quality). Her songs evoke the feelings you had the first time you listened to early Ani. Yes, those feelings. (Unless you’re not a fan of early Ani, in which case, I don’t know what do. Just go listen to Marissa Owens, okay? Take my word for it. Satisfaction guaranteed). Also, she currently attends SUNY purchase, and I have much love for anyone who attends a SUNY school.

Owens sings about young heartache and how the human condition presents itself in a diner. Everything is insanely relatable and earnest in that singer-songwriter-all-I-have-is-my-voice-and-a-guitar-way. You’ve been in these places, but her material doesn’t feel stale. It’s familiar in a very comfortable, vulnerable way.

She is currently working on her debut full length, was recently featured on the Homoground podcast (episode 73) and wrote on her facebook on what I assume was her 20th birthday, “I was nineteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen…and now I’m twenty. heh heh heh.” Alright, I think it’s time to fall in musical love with this one.
